Cassell announces child heatstroke prevention campaign

06/02/2020

Where's Baby? Look before you lock.

According to Searcy County Sheriff Kenny Cassell National Child Heatstroke Prevention campaign begins July 1. The slogan for this year's campaign is "Where's baby? Look before you lock."
Cassell said heatstroke is one of the leading causes of vehicular not-in-traffic non-crash related deaths for children under the age of 14.
Cassell said, "In fact, each year an average of 39 children have died from heatstroke since 1998."
these are the current statistics as of May 28, 2020: Child heatstroke fatalities in 2020: 2; Child heatstroke fatalities in 2019: 52; Child heatstroke fatalities in 2018: 53; Child heatstroke fatalities in 2017: 44.
"Sadly all of these deaths were preventable. While it seems like an impossible mistake to make, every parent or caregiver can potentially become distracted and distractions often fuel this devastating situation. No one is immune," Cassell said.
Cassell encourages everyone to find and share campaign information with parents, caregivers, schools and organizations, and remind everyone to "Look Before You Lock."
"We each have a role to play to help keep our kids safe. Help us share life-saving tips and resources with as many people as we can," Cassell added. "Take action, act fast and save a life."
