Couple is arrested on drug charges

07/20/2020

According to Searcy County Sheriff Kenny Cassell, Kaylee Cathcart, age 25 of Little Rock, and Merrel K. Blalock, age 26 of Mayflower, were arrested on July 5 following a traffic stop conducted by Searcy County Deputy Joey Baysinger.

Cassell stated the arrest occurred when Baysinger noticed the couple's vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with the hatchback open. When Baysinger approached the car and asked for the driver's, Cathcart, license she appeared to be nervous, shaking and slurring her words. When Baysinger asked the passenger, Blalock, for his license he was told he did not have one. Baysinger also noticed Blalock was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol.

While Baysinger ran Cathcart's information through the crime information system, she handed a Marshall Police Officer on scene a container with a green leafy substance inside. Cathcart told the officer she had a medical marijuana card but she did not provide one and the information was not found on file in the crime information system.

During a search, officers found a white pill identified as alprazolam in Blalock's wallet. Blalock was placed under arrest.

Baysinger then began to administer a series of standardized field sobriety tests to Cathcart, which she failed. Cathcart was placed under arrest.

Both were transported to the Searcy County Detention Center where Cathcart was charged with misdemeanor DWI - drugs; possession of a scheduled VI narcotic, LT 4 ounces; and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Blalock was charged with misdemeanor possession of a schedule VI narcotic LT 28 GM and public intoxication.
